The Mindanao Bloggers Summit 2

Last Saturday, all roads led to General Santos City. It was the venue of the highly anticipated Mindanao Bloggers Summit 2 with the theme “Mindanawon Paminawon Intawon: Blogging the Mindanao Consciousness.”

The morning started off on a high note with the funny but very much insightful presentation of THE JESTER who told Mindanao bloggers: “You have a problem!” According to him, Mindanao has a big PR problem, being mis- and underrepresented by mainstream media. Apparently, good news about Mindanao isn’t as sexy as we think it is. Jester challenged us to portray a better, more accurate picture of our island. Journalist Walter Balane, then then regaled us with his journey as a Mindanaoan blogger and his experiences with the many different peoples of Mindanao. The morning ended with Hector Miñoza‘s insights on the Mindanawon consciousness.

The afternoon session opened with some practical blogging tips from Aileen Apolo who asserted that three Cs will make you a successful blogger: content, be curious, and be in control. After which, it was my turn to talk about my experience in building and growing my business via a blog. I hope I was able to give as much information and wisdom as the other speakers. The final speaker of the day was photographer Bobby Timonera who admitted to being part of Mindanao’s problem. Bobby, early in his career, had submitted and published “sexy” photographs of Mindanao. I must say, he has totally redeemed himself with his majestic but balanced photographs in his current blog.

The afternoon ended with several niche bloggers in Mindanao sharing their experiences:

Lyle, one of Ratified‘s top bloggers, also shared some tips for optimizing one’s blog for money-making.

Throughout the day, Mindanao bloggers also got the chance to ask questions, win raffle prizes, and promote their blogs. A lot of the participants came from Davao and the Socsksargen region. There were also bloggers from as far as Zamboanga. WHOA!

The program was kept light and interesting by hosts Migs and Joanna Lapore.

Thank you to the organizers led by Avel, the sponsors, the volunteers, the speakers, and the participants who made the event really successful! I would like to commend the local city government of General Santos City who whole-heartedly hosted and supported the event as part of the Gen Santos E-Business Week Celebration! 🙂
